Vaqueros rally for first win on Powell’s walk-off double, 6-5

Paige Powell delivered a two-run walk-off double to right field on Saturday night, lifting SBCC to its first softball win – a 6-5 decision over L.A. Harbor.

The Vaqueros (1-3) trailed 5-3 entering the last of the fifth in the David Wilder Memorial Tournament at Glendale. All tourney games were five innings.

Kayana Diaz led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and the Vaqueros loaded the bases when Emily LoneTree and Shelby Featherston walked. Samantha Yanes was hit by a pitch, forcing in a run and cutting the deficit to 5-4.

With one out, Powell, a freshman from San Marcos High, doubled down the right-field line for the game-winning hit.

Janet Salas had a two-run triple in the first for the Vaqueros, who fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first, then scored three runs to pull within one.

Earlier in the day, L.A. Valley downed the Vaqueros 12-3.

SBCC will host Taft in its home opener on Tuesday in a doubleheader at 12 and 2 p.m.
