Irvine Valley beach volleyball had the team portion of the season end on Tuesday after two hard-fought matches at a So. Cal. Regional at the Newland Courts at Huntington Beach.
The Lasers split matches, falling to Orange Coast, 4-1, before rallying to defeat Rio Hondo, 3-2.
Orange Coast defeated both Irvine Valley and Rio Hondo to win the event and qualify for next week's California Community College Athletic Association State Championship.
The Lasers still have more to play for.
The pairs of sophomores Barett Nolan and Chloe Swanson, sophomore Gabi Brown and freshman Sydney Dews and sophomore Angie Griego and freshman Tessa Marocco will compete in the So. Cal. Regionals for pairs starting Friday at El Camino. The two-day event will determine the pairs that move on to the state tourney.
On Tuesday in Huntington Beach, Orange Coast came in the overall No. 3 seed in the regionals with Rio Hondo at No. 7 and IVC at 10th.
The Lasers played OCC tough early in the season before losing, 3-2, at IVC.
And sets were tight on Tuesday, but Orange Coast had too much.
The Pirates won on courts one, three and four in straight sets before getting the deciding victory on court four in three sets.
Irvine Valley's team of Brown and Dews battled, but lost, 15-7, in the third.
The Laser duo of sophomores Kendall Fraser and Alessandra Nitogilia picked up a victory on court five, 16-21, 21-19, 15-13.
Irvine Valley finished its day with a come-from-behind, 3-2 win over Rio Hondo.
The Lasers fell in matches on courts two and four, but Nolan and Swanson kept the Lasers alive with a 21-17, 21-19 victory on the first court.
IVC's Fraser and Nitogilia won again, 18-21, 21-18, 15-6, to even the overall match score at 2-2.
And then Griego and Marocco sealed the IVC triumph by winning, 18-21, 24-22, 15-7.
