Softball: Roadrunners win 2 of 4 at season-opening Glendale Tournament

Head coach Bianca Urquidi and her Rio Hondo College Roadrunners softball team got off to a good start as they opened the season earning two wins and a tie out of four games at the Glendale College Tournament.

On Friday, Rio Hondo began the season with an 8-1 loss to LA Mission College but bounced back later in the day with a 7-4 over Barstow Community College. Then on Saturday, Rio Hondo and host Glendale ended in a 10-10 draw before the Roadrunners closed the tourney with a narrow 10-9 victory over San Diego Mesa College.

Freshman Taylor Alcala was impressive in her Rio Hondo debut at the plate. Over three games, she was nearly perfect, collecting seven hits in eight at bats while scoring three runs.

Sophomore Sarah Hauffen-Salgado also had a big weekend. She sparked the Roadrunners' win over San Diego Mesa by going 2 for 3 with a home run and 5 RBI.

Freshman Alize Lopez picked up a win in the circle while also playing a big role with the bat. She totaled 4 RBI, getting two each against Glendale and San Diego Mesa while going 3 for 4 with a double over those contests.

Rio Hondo, now 2-1-1 overall, returns to action on Wednesday (Jan. 31) when the Roadrunners will play a pair of games at Golden West College. Rio Hondo will face San Diego Mesa again at 5 p.m. and take on Golden West at 7 p.m.
