SBVC Rallies, Can't Overtake Mt. San Jacinto

SBVC Rallies, Can't Overtake Mt. San Jacinto

Down 6-1 in the seventh inning Tuesday afternoon, the San Bernardino Valley College baseball team mounted a rally that would draw them even with Mt. San Jacinto College by the end of the eighth inning.

But the Eagles were able to push across a run with two outs in the ninth to pull out a 7-6 win over the Wolverines in Inland Empire Athletic Conference play.

The rally started with pinch-hitter Jose Ramirez drawing a walk and Cy Roberston legging out an infield single. Nathan Campos-Jaramillo loaded the bases with a bloop single to center. After pinch-hitter Jason Del Villar struck out, Ignacio Zamora put the ball through the left side to score Ramirez and Robertson, advancing Jaramillo to third as he pulled into second to chase MSJC starter Chris Scovel. Derek Ryan came in and got Melchor Flores to fly out to right to score Jaramillo, making it 6-4.

In the eighth, Angel Paredes was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and Omar Roses walked. Robertson was hit by another pitch to load the bases with no outs, ending the game for Ryan. Luis Acevedo came in and got Jaramillo to strike out swinging, but Marcos Zamora drew a walk to push home Parades. Then, with Ignacio Zamora at the plate - his home run was the only other SBVC run before the rally - Acevedo was called for a balk to score Rosas and tie the game. But with runners on second and third, the SBVC hitters could not score the go-ahead run.

MSJC took advantage in the ninth. Nico Reyes drew a walk from Daniel Cano to lead off the inning. Jacob Woods took the mound for SBVC, and had Christian Smith sacrifice bunt Reyes to second, followed by a strikeout of Gavin Copeland. With two outs, Andre Torres hit a ground ball that Ignacio Zamora misplayed and went into left field, allowing Reyes to score.

SBVC outhit the Eagles 11-9 in the game, and the Wolverine pitching staff combined for six strikeouts.

The two teams are scheduled to play Thursday at MSJC, with the finale set for 1 p.m. Saturday at SBVC.
