COD (9-1) kicked off the 2023 CCCAA SoCal Regionals with a nail-biting victory that came down to a near three-hour match at the number three singles, as the Roadrunners survived to play another round, knocking off the Glendale Vaqueros (13-8), 5-4.

In doubles play, the 1's team of freshman Hana Moss (National City Sweetwater Union) and sophomore Emunah Daffon (Palm Springs H.S.) had no problems, winning 8-0. The 2's team of freshman Maryn Petek (Palm Desert H.S.) and sophomore Antonella Mazzotti (Rancho Mirage H.S.) took down Glendale in a tougher match, 8-3. The 3's team of freshman Ayano Tsuchiya (Yokohoma (JPN) Hayato) and freshman Abigaile Corado (Norwalk John Glenn) fell in a close match, 8-6.

In singles play, Tsuchiya was the only player who won easily, winning her match at the 4's in straight sets. Moss also won in straight sets at the 1's, but had to fight to grab a 6-1, 7-5 win. After losses at the 2's, 5's and 6's, the Roadrunners were tied with Glendale 4-4. The entire match hinged on the 3's, where Petek won the first set, dropped the second and slugged her way through the extra set, where she was down 3-1 during the contest, to break the tie and secure the win for Desert.

The next contest for the Roadrunners will be hosting the winner of the Saddleback at Bakersfield match on Tuesday, April 18 at 3p.

College of the Desert defeated Glendale College, 5-4 in the first round of the CCCAA Regional Playoffs hosted at College of the Desert in Palm Desert.
