Women’s Basketball: Rio Hondo season ends with playoff loss at Ventura

An impressive Rio Hondo College women's basketball season came to a close with the No. 12-seeded Roadrunners' 60-49 loss at No. 5 Ventura College in the second round of the 2019 Southern California Regional Playoffs on Friday night.

A poor night shooting cost Rio Hondo a chance at upsetting the Pirates on their home court. Despite jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead to open the game, the Roadrunners made just 6 of 27 field goals over the first and second quarters and went into halftime trailing 30-17.

The Roadrunners found their touch in the second half, outscoring Ventura 32-30 over the final two periods. Rio Hondo got within seven points, 49-42, after a Kailey Gutierrez three-pointer with 6:19 to play in the fourth. But the first-half, 13-point deficit was too much to overcome.

Amanda Lee closed out an outstanding freshman season by pouring in a game-high 18 points, including scoring all 11 of Rio Hondo's points in the second quarter. She added 4 assists, 3 steals, and 3 rebounds.

Amy Navarro nearly had a double-double with 8 points and a team-high 12 rebounds while Gutierrez added 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Rio Hondo ended the 2018-19 season with a 16-15 overall record under second-year head coach Rene Herrera. The Roadrunners made their first postseason appearance since 2016.
