Mt. SAC’s 13-Game Winning Streak is Broken by Santa Ana, 6-5

(Walnut, CA) A fifth-inning grand slam ended a Mt. SAC 13-game winning streak, as visiting Santa Ana College edged the Mounties, 6-5 in non-conference action Monday (3/11).

The Mounties, who recently regained the CCCAA State No. 1 ranking, took a 5-2 lead into the fifth inning, but a two-out, homerun by the Dons' Drea DeFord gave Santa Ana a 6-5 lead. DeFord knocked in all six of the Dons runs.

Mt. SAC made one final threat in the sixth inning after loading the bases, but failed to score.

With the loss, the Mounties are 13-2 overall and freshman pitcher Alexia Silvas (4-1) suffered her first defeat of the season.

After the Dons took a first-inning 2-0 lead, the Mounties turned to the long ball in the next two innings.

Silvas (2 for 3, R, 2 RBIs) helped herself in the circle with an opposite field, two-run shot in the second, scoring catcher Adriana Ramirez (1 for 3, R) to tie the game at 2-2.

An inning later, third baseman Ciara Granado (1 for 3, R, 3 RBIs) also hit an opposite-field, three-run home run to right, scoring Vicky Gutierrez (1 for 3, R) and Candace Haliburton (1 for 3, R, SB) for the 5-2 lead.

Mt. SAC will play three more games this week, with the first being at Cerritos (3/12), then on to El Camino (3/14) and back home Friday (3/15) against Compton.
