Pirates pick up gritty 3-2 win over Rio Hondo

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team had its hands full with visiting Rio Hondo, but the Pirates put forth of their best overall efforts of the season to earn a 3-2 nonconference win over the Roadrunners on Tuesday night inside LeBard Stadium.

With the match tied at one, Leah Martinovich had an opportunity to put the Pirates (6-0-1) in front with a free kick and the sophomore defender did not miss, ripping a shot just under the crossbar from 28 yards out in the 63rd minute to put OCC up front for good.

A little over 14 minutes later, Cina Wilson made a nice run down the right sideline and slipped a perfect pass onto the head of teammate Sydney Powell, who deflected the pass into the back of the net to make it 3-1.

But the Roadrunners (2-2-1) made things interesting in the final minutes when Alexis Macias ripped her second goal of the night under the crossbar in the 89th minute to make it 3-2 and from there, the Pirates needed to fight off three stressful minutes of stoppage time to secure the win.

Lily Carroll scored the first goal of the match off a Wilson assist in the 35th minute before the Roadrunners tied things up 11 minutes later when Macias beat OCC goalkeeper Jessica Gardner to a loose ball and calmly chipped it into the back of the net.

Gardner brushed off the goal and played well for the Pirates with seven saves. In fact, that first goal of the night for RHC was the first goal allowed by OCC the entire season, snapping a run of 589 consecutive scoreless minutes to start the season.

The Pirates will return to action on Thursday night -- again at LeBard Stadium -- against L.A. City College, beginning at 7 p.m.
