SBCC turned the ball over 15 times in the first half of Friday's consolation semifinal and Porterville took advantage to build a 40-23 halftime lead on the way to an 87-62 victory in the 46th annual SBCC Classic.
The Pirates (5-5) grabbed 15 of their 21 first-half rebounds at the offensive end. Santa Barbara (0-11) finished with 21 turnovers and Porterville had just eight.
"We didn't play hard in the first half and the turnovers contributed to that," said SBCC's 30-year head coach Morris Hodges. "They had 15 offensive rebounds and they just outplayed us completely. They outworked us, out-hustled us and those 15 turnovers on top of that were an energy killer. That was the worst first half we've played all season."
Dustin Henderson hit 4-of-6 from long distance and led the Pirates with 23 points. Dominic King had a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Adrian Juilland-Johnson had his second straight solid game for the Vaqueros, scoring 17 points on 6-11 shooting, including 3-5 on 3's, and collecting six rebounds. Brycyn Gossett added 14 points and four rebounds.
Porterville took control with a 19-3 run in the first half. Tayshawun Bradford hit a 3-pointer and King nailed two free throws to stretch the lead to 22-7 with 11:24 to go in the first half.
The Vaqueros outshot the Pirates 50 to 45.6% but Porterville took 22 more shots (68 to 46) because of the turnovers and 20 offensive rebounds.
Joseph Holden and Jacob Canada added seven points apiece for the Vaqueros and Angel Gutierrez scored his first points of the season with two layups in the last three minutes.
"I was happy with Jacob and Angel," said Hodges. "They don't play very much and they were really solid and executed well."
SBCC will take on WSC rival Oxnard in the seventh-place game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
