Dons Fall Just Short of Upset Against No.1 Seeded Mt. SAC

WALNUT, Calif. - Santa Ana Men's Soccer came just short of eliminating the No. 1 seeded Mt. San Antonio College Mounties in round two of the CCCAA SoCal Regionals on Tuesday, November 23rd.

The Dons were sharp out the gate and took a 1-0 lead into halftime as Josue Martinez scored the first goal of the match off a pass from Marquise Mitchell at the 37th minute mark.

In the second half, the Mounties came alive and went on the offensive. After forcing a ball into the box, Mt. SAC drew a foul and scored on a penalty kick to tie the match at 1-1.

The two teams went back and forth from there, each having opportunities to score until Santa Ana's Omar Rodriguez chipped a shot into the back of the Mountie net in the 75th minute to give SAC a 2-1 lead and send the Don bench into a frenzy.

With the lead in hand and just a few minutes left the Dons seemed bound for the semi-final but Mt. SAC had other plans.

At the 87th minute mark, Alex Mendez lined a shot into the top left corner of Santa Ana's goal to force overtime.

In overtime, the Dons fell behind as Mt. SAC scored just four minutes in. Following the goal, Santa Ana could not recover as they were given three red cards in the last 30 minutes which gave Mt. SAC an 11 on 8 advantage and led to two more goals and a 5-2 final score.

With the loss, Santa Ana has finished the season in the second round of the SoCal Regionals for the third consecutive season. The Dons end the year with a record of 10-6-6 overall.
