Rascon and McCarthy Nab No. 4 Seed for CCCAA State Championships
TORRANCE, Calif. --- El Camino College's top pair of Fayth Rascon and Lauren McCarthy wrapped up day two of the California Community College Beach Volleyball Southern California Regionals on Saturday at the ECC Sand Courts and grabbed the No. 4 seed from SoCal for next week's state championships.
The 2022 South Coast Conference pairs champions opened the day with an impressive 21-10, 21-17 sweep over Jaclyn Sanchez and Emily Guenter of Irvine Valley.
But it proved to be the only win of the day for the duo as they fell in the CCCAA Regional Semifinals to Alanna Shields and Sophia Sola of Orange Coast College; 21-18, 21-18.
Sola and Shields would go on to grab the No. 1 SoCal seed after a win by forfeit in the regional finals.
Rascon and McCarthy wrapped up the day in a match for the No. 3 seed against Cypress' Tainea Allen and Jordon Wilson. The Warriors got off to a slow start in the first set and eventually fell 21-14. But the team bounced back in the second to even the match with a 21-18 decision, forcing a decisive third set.
The final set was a back-and-forth affair early with the teams within one point of each other until Cypress strung a few points together to take a 9-6 lead at the technical timeout. It was more of the same out of the timeout as the Chargers went on to take the final set, 15-10, to claim the No. 3 seed and relegate Rascon and McCarthy to the No. 4 spot.
The CCCAA Pairs State Championships are set to take place on May 13-14 at Irvine Valley College.
