Men’s Basketball: Roadrunners rally late for win at Golden West

Sophomore Aaron Patterson scored a game-high 23 points but it took a late-game rally for Rio Hondo College to pull out a 70-67 non-conference victory at Golden West College in Huntington Beach on Wednesday.

The win moved the Roadrunners to 2-3 while Golden West dropped to 0-5.

Rio Hondo held a narrow 30-27 halftime advantage and led for a majority of the second half. But a dunk by the Rustlers' Eric Watson with 3:18 to play put Golden West out in front 61-59.

But the Roadrunners responded with a layup by Kameron Hobbs on their ensuing possession to tie up the contest. Hobbs followed with a big steal which led to the go-ahead three-pointer by Kevin Sandoval to give Rio Hondo the lead for good at 64-61 with 2:17 left on the clock. The Roadrunners went on to outscore Golden West 11-6 over the remainder of the game.

Patterson posted a double-double, adding a team-high 10 rebounds to go with his 23 points. He also posted 2 steals and block. John Mims had a double-double of his own, coming up with 14 points and 11 assists.

Bryant Howing (9 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists) and Hobbs (7 points, 6 rebounds) also contributed to the win.

The Roadrunners return to action on Friday (Nov. 15) when they travel to College of the Desert for a 6 p.m. non-conference game.
