CCSF picks up win over Laney at Coast Crossover Tournament #2

The City College of San Francisco women's water polo team earned its first victory of the season, splitting a pair of games at the Coast Crossover Tournament #2 at De Anza College on Friday.

The Rams opened the afternoon with a 17-2 loss to host De Anza. Later that day, the Rams were awarded a victory over Laney College when the game was called off in the third quarter due to a power outage. At the time, CCSF was leading 8-5.

Against De Anza, Melanie Lazaro and Melanie Beavan-Szabo scored goals and Samantha McEvoy posted four saves.

San Francisco and Laney played a much more competitive match. Beavan-Szabo scored four of her team-high five goals in the first quarter to give CCSF a narrow 4-3 lead.

In the second, Beavan-Szabo and Zoellen Eichen scored and once again the Rams held a one-goal lead 6-5 heading into halftime. The third period saw CCSF extend its advantage after goals by Melanie Lazaro and Eichen. But with 6:11 to play in the quarter, the power went out at the De Anza aquatics complex and the game was called.

CCSF coach Natalie Taylor was encouraged by her team's play.

"This was our second time playing both teams, and I'm so proud of the effort that was put forth from our ladies," said Taylor. "In our second game of the day against Laney, we were communicating well and executing different tactics that we had been working on in practice. They showed a lot of improvement overall from even just a few weeks ago, especially on the defensive end.

"This game unfortunately had to be called at the 3rd quarter with 6:11 on the clock, due to an electrical outage.  Nonetheless, we had fun, played hard, and showed good teamwork."

The Rams (1-7 overall, 0-4 conference), return to action on Wednesday (Oct. 27) when they host Ohlone College in a 3 p.m. Coast Conference game.
