Second-half Mustang goals sink Falcons, 2-0

Battling sheets of rain that came down sideways, the #3 seeded Folsom Lake Falcons and #11 seeded Delta Mustangs went toe-to-toe on Tuesday evening at Falcon Stadium to decide who would advance to Round 3 of the CCCAA state playoffs.  After a scoreless first half, the Mustangs seized control with the wind at their backs, scoring two second-half goals to secure the hard-fought win, 2-0.  The two Big 8 Conference foes had already met twice this season; the first match at Delta in September resulted in a 0-0 tie, then the Falcons prevailed 2-0 in Folsom five weeks later.  But this time the Mustangs had a plan and it worked to perfection.  They were content to sit back and play defense for the first half while the wind (20-30 mph) was in the faces.  In the second half - now with an even stronger tailwind - the Mustangs stepped up their attack and were able to find the net on a long left-footer that hooked around several players (effectively shielding it from the goalkeeper Arman Salimi's view) in the 55th minute.  The Mustangs added an insurance goal in the 75th minute with a high lofting shot that caught the wind and carried over Salimi's reach, effectively ending the Falcons' season.  Their desperate attempts to push the ball forward were all but stopped by the incessant wind.

The Falcons finish the season 13-6-5 while the Mustangs will take their 13-6-4 record to Fresno to face the #2 seeded Rams (15-1-7).
