Women's volleyball team sweeps Southwestern, moves to 3-1

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team earned the No. 8 spot in the first California Community College Women's Volleyball Coaches Association poll on Wednesday morning

And the Lasers proved that ranking Wednesday night.

IVC improved its record to 3-1 on the season and earned its third sweep of the year with a 25-15, 25-12, 25-16 win over Southwestern at home.

Irvine Valley hit .355 as a team on the night and had four players with at least five kills.

Sophomore opposite Jayli Nealy ended with 12 kills and hit .323 and sophomore middle blocker Kendall Fraser had 10 kills and hit .769.

Fraser ended the second set with a nice kill on a quick hit in the middle.

The Lasers scored the last four points of the third set to put the match away.

Ahead, 21-16, freshman middle blocker Kristen Skenes had a kill, Skenes and sophomore outside hitter Emily Hon blocked a ball for a point, sophomore outside hitter Angelina Griego finished on the outside off an assist from Skenes and then Skenes ended the match with an overpass kill.

Irvine Valley received contributions from all around.

Freshman outside hitter Tessa Marocco was all over the court with eight kills and 16 digs and sophomore outside hitter Chloe Swanson had five kills.

Freshman setter Mia Bertolone paced the offense with 21 assists. Sophomore setter Maddie Harkey chipped in nine assists and five digs.

Sophomore libero Gabi Brown also had nine digs for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley is back in action on Friday at the San Diego Mesa quad event. IVC takes on MiraCosta at 2 p.m. and then plays host Mesa at 5 p.m.
