Softball: Starts Season with a Home Win Behind Green's Three Hits

Huntington Beach, Calif. - Golden West College softball put on a show in their season opener beating San Bernardino Valley 12-6 at home on Wednesday.

San Bernardino batters took advantage of misplaced pitches, taking an early 5-0 lead over the Rustlers in the top of the first inning.

The Rustler offense answered later that inning after Makayla Weiser reached on an error, scoring two runs.

Starting pitcher Sennie Viramontes helped put the Rustlers back in the game with a two-run single, making it a one-run game at 5-4. In total, Viramontes was responsible for three runs batted in.

Freshman outfielder Isabella Green led the Rustlers offense, batting 3-for-5 at the plate. She dominated baserunning as well, adding a stolen base to her stat line. Green crossed the plate three times for the Rustlers in today's game.

Defense showed up for the Rustlers the next inning and kept that stride, catching the leadoff runner in a rundown. Viramontes used an unsuccessful first inning as fuel to locate her pitches and challenge San Bernardino hitters. She earned her first win (1-0) of the season following her four-inning outing, recording four strikeouts, and 3 earned runs out of the six scored while in the circle.

This Rustler team made a promising comeback to secure their first win of the season. This team consists of three returning players and 11 new additions. Coach Willey has recruited a stacked team who looks to have a winning season.

Softball will return to the field on Saturday for a double header against Cerro Coso. The first game is set for 12 p.m. and the second will follow at 2:15 p.m.
