Mountie Women Water Polo Sweep West Valley Invite with Four Wins

(Saratoga, CA)  The Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo Team ventured north for the West Valley College Invitational and came away with four wins, scoring 66 goals last Friday and Saturday (SEP 14 & 15).

Mt. SAC (5-1) has now scored 93 goals and is averaging 15.5 per game.

Leading the way for the Mounties in the West Valley Tournament was utility player Erin DeAnda with 16 goals, followed by Reannon Urias with 14 goals (5 steals) and 13 each from Miranda Silva and Colleen Gamboa.

DeAnda leads the team with 21 goals in six games.

On the defensive side, Silva lead the Mounties with 11 steals, followed by seven from driver Rebecca Garcia and six each from Gamboa and driver Kaitlin Howard.   

"The girls played well all weekend," Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo coach Chris Jackson said. "We had big performances from Erin, Kaitlin and Colleen.

"Our biggest challenge was West Valley, who has a strong goalie and 2-meter player. The girls, for the most part executed our game plan."


Game 1 - Mt. SAC 18, Sacramento City 0

For the second game in a row the Mounties shut out their opponent.  Leading the charge was Goalie Krist Mertins.  

Urias led the team with six goals (4 assists, 3 steals), followed by three each from Gamboa (4 steels) and DeAnda.


Game 2 - Mt. SAC 16, Santa Rosa 9

For the second game in a row, Urias led the team in goals with five and three steals. Silva and DeAnda (3 steals) added four goals each.

The Mounties jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held a 7-5 lead at the half over Santa Rosa. DeAnda and Urias led the Mounties in the second half with four and three goals, respectively, while Mertins made eight saves in the game.


Game 3 - Mt. SAC 21, Foothill 10

The Mounties, in their largest goal output (21)of the early season schedule, were led by Gamboa and Silva with seven and six goals, respectively.

The Mounties trailed for the first time in the tournament, 5-4 after the opening period. After eight consecutive goals in the second period the Mounties took the lead at 12-5 and never looked back for the 11-point win.

They outscored the Bear Cubs 9-5 in the second half, led by Gamboa and Silva who eached scored three. Mertins had nine saves for Mt. SAC.


Game 4 - Mt. SAC 11, West Valley 8

DeAnda led the team with six goals and Howard had three. Urias had a game-high six steals for the Mounties.

Mt. SAC had a comfortable 7-2 lead at the half, but the Vikings closed the gap with three goals and trailed 8-5 after three periods.

"We made some mistakes in the game that allowed a few scoring runs for them," Jackson said.

Each team scored three goals in the fourth period, with DeAnda scoring all three for the Mounties.

Mertins made 12 saves for Mt. SAC in goal.


Mt. SAC will travel to El Camino College this Wednesday, September 19th, for a South Coast Conference Matchup.  The will then return home to host the annual Mt SAC Women's Water Polo Classic beginning Friday, September 21st.

The Classic, co-hosted by Fullerton College will feature 15 teams, with the Mounties playing Saddleback College, on Friday (10:20 am) at the Marie T. Mills Aquatics Center.
